My goal for each client is simple: I want you to have a body that will last forever (or at least until you're 100!). To do that, your body must be free, which is why my fitness philosophy is based on a holistic view of the body. In real life, you use your body as a whole, so you need to train your body the same way.

I like to think of the body as an orchestra: each muscle is an instrument, and the brain is the conductor. It's very important to tune each instrument and make sure it's flexible, strong and play in tune. After you've done that, it's also important to make sure that each instrument is playing with the others. You can do anything with your body if it's strong and flexible.

Your body does know how to move - but it may not know how to move correctly in order to create music and harmony. For that reason, I focus on movement patterns directed by breath, rather than just isolated muscle training.

First, do corrective exercises to get rid of aches and pains and to align your posture.

This is important because when one muscle doesn't work, others compensate, creating wear and tear on the body. For example, you may have followed a training regimen in the past in which you go to the gym, run, lift weights - and end up feeling worse. The reason is that your body is not in balance, so some muscles are tight and they're putting pressure on your joints.

Everyday life can also create imbalances that should be corrected before moving on to the next stage of training. For example, if you sit in front of a computer all day, your posture is already out of alignment. You need to correct your posture by stretching the tight muscles and strengthening the weak ones. Weight training at this point will only reinforce the imbalance.

Second, increase your balance and strengthen your core with stability exercises.
Your ligaments and muscles hold you skeleton together, so it's vital that they be strengthened from the deepest level.

Finally, tone your muscles through strength training.
I've developed this training system through my own fitness experiences and through my own passion for lifelong learning. I trained as a professional dancer. In 1997, I became a fitness trainer and have continued to explore many types of fitness in order to incorporate their best practices into my own program. I now train clients using exercises from a number of disciplines, including functional weight lifting, meditation, yoga, Pilates, martial arts, and dance.

I see my role with clients as a coach - the second eye who can watch you and make adjustments to your movements. I want to help you discover your own body and how it works and, in the process, become more aware of your body and what it really needs. When that happens, you will be truly free in your body.
